again. Not sure if any messages might've gone missing from
the archives, but at least the main archive pages seem to
at least load now - whereas before they were (double) erroring

The Center for Integrated Computing and STEM Education (The C-STEM Center)
presented by Professor Harry H. Cheng,
Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, UC Davis
C-STEM, "Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics",
<http://c-stem.ucdavis.edu/about-us/> is a UC Approved Educational
Preparation Program for Undergraduate Admission for all University of
California campuses. Participation in the C-STEM program is recognized
in the UC admissions process as achievements that have explicitly
prepared students for college and career.
UC Davis recently launched a new national program for school districts
across the country that will make it easier for students to have
computer science educations starting in first grade. This new
curriculum provides students with a full first-grade-to-high-school
curriculum that includes mathematics from the Center for Integrated
Computing and STEM Education at UC Davis (the C-STEM Center).
The C-STEM Center, founded by Professor Harry Cheng in 2010, aims
to transform C-STEM education in both formal and informal K-14
programs through integrated learning, guided by two key objectives:
(1) close the achievement gap by broadening participation of
students traditionally underrepresented in computing and STEM
related careers and post-secondary study, and (2) develop students'
21st century problem-solving skills to tackle real world concerns
through integrated computing and STEM education.
The center's vision is to provide formal computing education for
all K-12 students. The C-STEM ICT (information and communications
technology) Pathway will provide K-12 students with 12 years of
computer science education through hands-on integrated learning of
math and computer science with coding in the C and C++ languages,
and Blockly, a client-side JavaScript library for creating visual
block programming editors which run in a web browser (an open source
project of Google, and which resembles Scratch).
The C-STEM Center can provide two-day training academies and weeklong
institutes in using the curriculum in the classroom for teachers
who have no prior computer programming and robotics experience.

Dr. Harry Cheng <http://faculty.engineering.ucdavis.edu/cheng/>
is a professor at UC Davis' Department of Mechanical and Aerospace
Engineering, and is founder and director of the C-STEM Center. In 2006,
he found that few students in his freshman computer programming course
had prior experience in the subject. Inspired to increase exposure
to computing in K-12 classrooms, Cheng saw a larger opportunity
to transform how students from elementary school to college learn
computing, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (C-STEM).

Red Hat Inc. and DevNation are holding this year's Red Hat
Summit at SF's Moscone Center this Monday thru Wednesday,
June 27th thru June 29th, see [1] and [2].
Of course that's less than a handful of blocks from BALUG's
own monthly meeting venue [3].
For reference purposes, the most current RH Rates and locations
page [4] lists full conference passes in the *VERY* high
triple-digits, as in $950+ !
Probably unlikely by this point, but does anyone here know where
one could still score a $0.00 Free-as-in-Beer Exhibitions Only-type
pass/entry-code to this event or at least an onsite pass/entry-code
in the *VERY* low double-digits??

Thanks to the venue suggestion by Michael Paoli, and the fine folks at
OpenDNS, we now have a location, time and date reserved for our 16.04
Release Party in San Francisco next month!
On July 28th from 6:30 - 8:30 our party will be hosted by OpenDNS at
135 Bluxome St. This is near the San Francisco Caltrain station at 4th
and King, and is also easily accessible via MUNI.
We'll have:
• Presentation highlighting Ubuntu 16.04 features.
• Laptops running 16.04.
• Tablets running the latest Ubuntu build, including the bq Aquaris
M10 that shipped with Ubuntu and demonstrates convergence.
• Giveaways: Ubuntu books, pens, stickers and more.
Pizza and beverages will be provided.

A general introduction to the Inkscape vector graphics editor, and
how it can be used for both graphic design work, as well as modifying
existing images, using cartography as an example (modifying the data
output from a Geographic Information System (GIS)).
About Inkscape:
Inkscape is a free and open source professional vector graphics editor
for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. It can be used to create or edit
vector graphics -- the use of polygons to represent images (as opposed
to raster graphics, a dot matrix representing a rectangular grid of
pixels, or points of color) -- such as illustrations, diagrams, line
arts, charts, logos and complex paintings. Inkscape's primary vector
graphics format is Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), a widely-deployed
royalty-free graphics format developed and maintained by the W3C SVG
Working Group. It is a markup language for describing two-dimensional
graphics.
About the Speaker:
Michele Tobias is an Environmental Scientist at the Natural Resource
Division of California State Parks, where she develops and analyzes
data, databases, and methods for natural resources and ecology of
California's State Park system. Independently, she also develops
and teaches about open source geospatial tools, builds low-altitude
aerial photography platforms (kites and remote-controlled hobby hot
air balloons, together with consumer-grade cameras), and works to
refine and automate the photo processing workflow.
Michele received a PhD in Geography from UC Davis, and was a Post
Doc at UCD's Information Center for the Environment. The goal of her
research is to understand the current distribution of California's beach
plants and how humans affect this. Data collection is a combination
of traditional phytosociological methods and innovative remote sensing.
Michele uses Inkscape as part of a workflow that produces
professional-quality maps from QGIS, an open source Geographic
Information System. She presented a talk on the topic, "Cartography with
Inkscape," at the 2016 FOSS4G-NA (Free & Open Software for Geospatial,
North America) conference earlier this year.

This talk will describe how to use Docker, a container technology
for building reproducible software environments.
About Docker:
Docker allows you to package an application with all of its dependencies
into a standardized unit for software development. Docker containers
wrap up a piece of software in a complete filesystem that contains
everything it needs to run: code, runtime, system tools, system
libraries -- anything you can install on a server. This guarantees
that it will always run the same, regardless of the environment it is
running in.
About the Speaker:
Karen Yin-Yee Ng is a Physics PhD student at UC Davis. She recently
completed an internship at the Data Analytics Services team at
the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC)
in Berkeley.
