Tuesday, June 21st, 2005, starting at 6:30 P.M. PST8PDT One evening, so much BALUG excitement at one location :-) 6:30 P.M. PGP/GPG keysigning begins (details further below) 7:00 P.M. dinner and featured speaker Moshe Bar, CTO of XenSource, Open Source vereran and openMosix Project leader At 7:00 P.M., we move to our assemblage for dinner ($10.00 per person for dinner, dinner starts promptly at 7:10 P.M.), and will have as our featured speaker Moshe Bar, CTO of XenSource, Open Source vereran and openMosix Project leader. Prior to XenSource, Bar co-founded Qlusters, Inc., where he served as CTO, leading the company's technology and product strategy. Previously, Moshe was VP, ERP implementations, at Baan Europe. He is the author of three books on Linux internals and Open Source development tools. Abstract: Virtualization is a new and hot item to the world of Linux and Windows. There have been, however, virtualization technologies for over 40 years starting with the IBM emulators for mainframes and later with CP67 and VM virtualizing operating systems. Preceding that, starting at 6:30 P.M. BALUG will have a PGP/GPG keysigning event. As keysigning won't be possible during most of the later part of the BALUG meeting (as we have speaker/presentation), please try to make it as close to 6:30 P.M. as possible if you're interested in the keysigning. If you're interested in having your key signed, bring government issued photo ID (e.g. drivers license or passport, etc.) and for your key(s), key ID and key fingerprint (preferably on little slips of paper). For signing other folks keys, you'll probably want to make some notes (e.g. bring a writing implement). Placing your key(s) on the biglumber event keyring for this event: https://www.biglumber.com/x/web?ev=77348 (preferably at least several hours ahead of time if possible) can also help facilitate ease of keysigning and key exchange. Even if you're not interested the keysigning itself, as always, you're welcome to join us starting as early as 6:30 P.M. BALUG May 17th presentation: LVM (Logical Volume Manager)

For the BALUG May 17th meeting, we will feature a presentation on Logical Volume Manager (LVM) on LINUX by Michael Paoli. BALUG and meeting general information (location, time, dinner cost, etc.) can be found on the BALUG web site: http://www.balug.org/ About Logical Volume Manager (LVM) and the presentation: LVM allows for rather powerful and flexible management of hard drive space. Rather than mostly having to deal with physical disks and partitions, with LVM, one creates logical volumes, which can then be used to contain filesystems or other data. With logical volumes, one can relocate and resize logical volumes while the data they contain is in use, and in general, without regard to partition boundaries or disk sizes - as logical volumes can also span multiple disks. This can make LVM a very power tool, for example allowing one to: * grow a filesystem while it's in use (if the filesystem type supports growing it on-line) * relocate in-use data (filesystem or whatever) to different physical device or type of storage (for example, take a filesystem that is in use and move it between different types of storage (e.g. among non-RAID, RAID-5, RAID-1 or RAID-0+1 devices)) * more efficiently manage multiple filesystems on systems from those with large numbers of disk storage arrays through those with as little as a single hard drive The presentation also promises to include a live demonstration of use of LVM on LINUX, and also a bit of information about volume management software in general on LINUX and UNIX platforms. About Michael Paoli, our presenter for this event: Michael Paoli has been doing UNIX systems administration for well over a decade, has been using volume management software for about 9 years, has been using doing LINUX systems administration for almost 7 years, and has been using LVM on LINUX for about 2 years.

You do not need to be a member to attend. -------- Where: Apple Computer, Town Hall Auditorium Addr: Four Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA http://www.baylisa.org/locations/current.html -------- Date: Thursday, 16 September 2004 Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm PST Forests and Trees: Building an Open Source Discovery & Management Tool with XML Philippe Ombredanne In a an ideal world everything on the network would have a simple management interface, and every tool could access it. Well, in our real world, large shops typically have at least one version of every major network equipment, hardware, and software produced in the last ten years.... As sysadmins, we rely on a mixture of commercial and open source network management tools and a lot of scripting and elbow grease to accomplish our magic. What about an open source system where all management data could be accessed remotely, without an agent to install on your 1000 servers and all protocols could be used with a friendly URL, and return standardized data that could queried and combined together regardless of where they are coming from? The recipe? Put a dose of ssh, sftp, http, nmap, smb, snmp, wbem, wmi, nfs, webdav, dns, dhcp, smtp, wins, ldap, sql, mibs, mofs, ping, arp and a couple other in a large pot. Stir well your alphabet soup, throw in a couple RFCs for spice, then add a pinch of URI, XML, Xpath and Xquery, some scripting, heat up to a gentle boil, and you get something that might taste good, or at least different. In this presentation, we will walk through design issues and trade-offs for such an open source system, and show new ways to extend the web and XML to network management, using existing tools, techniques, and skills. Some live demo will be made of the kind of weird and funny capabilities that are exposed. Philippe Ombredanne is the CTO of nexB, a developer of open source enterprise applications, the last frontier for open source. He was previously at BearingPoint, Accenture, and McDonnell Douglas, where he worked as a sysadmin, developer, and consultant. -------- BayLISA meets every month on the 3rd Thursday of the month.
