BALUG: REMINDER: TODAY!: Tu 2010-03-16: ScaleMP vSMP Foundation for
SMP presented by Nir Paikowsky and Kiran Thirumalai of ScaleMP
Bay Area Linux User Group (BALUG)
Tuesday 6:30 P.M. 2010-03-16
Please RSVP if you're planning to come (see further below).
For our 2010-03-16 BALUG meeting (TODAY!), we're excited to
present:
ScaleMP[1] vSMP Foundation for SMP[2] presented by Nir Paikowsky and
Kiran Thirumalai of ScaleMP
ScaleMP's vSMP Foundation software enables the creation of a single
virtual symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) system by aggregating, or
combining, multiple industry-standard x86 systems running off-the shelf
Linux - which can create a large virtual machine perfect for demanding
workloads. vSMP Foundation offers the following benefits to data centers
running Linux:
o scalable x86 SMP with up to 128 cores and 4TB RAM
o maintains cache coherency between individual boards using multiple
advanced coherency algorithms
o utilizes all system storage and networking controllers to prove
high-I/O system capabilities
o creates the required BIOS and ACPI environment to provide the OS (and
the software stack above the OS) a coherent image of a single system
o up to 5X cost savings over traditional SMP systems
Nir Paikowsky is director of application and sales engineering for ScaleMP.
Kiran Thirumalai is Linux Kernel team lead for ScaleMP.

We will also have a supply of Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" CDs on hand for
our BALUG 2010-03-16 meeting.
So, if you'd like to join us please RSVP to:

**Why RSVP??**
Well, don't worry we won't turn you away, but the RSVPs really help the
Four Seas Restaurant plan the meal and they help ensure that we'll be
able to eat upstairs in the private banquet room.

security considerations and live demonstrations. Areas to, or likely
to be covered include:
o What is ssh?
o Why ssh?
o History, Open Source, & ssh
o The basics: how
o Some common Open Source clients
o Keys - the good, the bad and the ugly (and how to, and how not to)
o ssh-agent
o Authentication forwarding (& benefits & risks)
o X-11 forwarding - why, and how
o command arguments and tty allocation, or not
o port forwarding
o ssh & related security care and feeding
Got a specific question or area you'd like to see covered in the
presentation about ssh? Michael Paoli also invites you to drop him a
note:
Michael.Paoli(a)cal.berkeley.edu
and he'll likely add it to the talk/presentation if it's not already in
there.
Michael Paoli has been using ssh and friends both personally and
professionally for over a decade. By profession he's a Linux/Unix
systems administrator with well over a decade of experience, and also
has over ten years experience working in quite security conscious
environments (e.g. major financial institution). And for fun, he ...
... well, yeah, lots of Linux, etc. stuff in there too.

Tuesday 6:30 P.M. 2010-01-19
Please RSVP if you're planning to come (see further below).
For our 2010-01-19 BALUG meeting, we're excited to present:
Porting IPv4-only applications to IPv4/IPv6 dual stack by Owen DeLong,
IPv6 Evangelist of Hurricane Electric[1]
In "Porting IPv4-only applications to IPv4/IPv6 dual stack", we will
learn the basics of IPv6 socket programming and see how to upgrade
existing applications in C, PERL, and Python using "running code"
examples prepared by Owen.
Owen DeLong is an IPv6 Evangelist at Hurricane Electric and a member of
the ARIN[2] Advisory Council. In these roles, he's intimately familiar
with the details of IPv4 runout and the need to transition towards dual
stack on existing applications to enable IPv6-only clients in the near
future.

Tuesday 6:30 P.M. 2009-11-17
Please RSVP if you're planning to come (see further below).
For our 2009-11-17 BALUG meeting, we're excited to present:
2009-11-17 Mark Terranova on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala[1]
Mark Terranova will be giving a talk about what is new in Ubuntu[2]'s
newest release - Karmic Koala. He will also speak some about his
experiences with Local tech stuff.
Mark Terranova is a "West Coast Community-Developed-Software guy". Mark
has regularly taught many types of computer classes specializing in the
benefits of Linux and Cross-Platform Software.
He has been involved with spreading Ubuntu for a while. He has helped
organize Ubuntu Release Parties and other tech events that make it fun
- using beer, BBQ, and other ways to create a fun community. He has
spent much time in Portland, Oregon working with FreeGeek.org[3]. Their
unique style helped him learn how to involve more people in computing.
This knowledge has helped him in his role as co-founder of Gidget
Kitchen[4] (GK). "Gidget Kitchen donates computers, generally using
Ubuntu, to groups and individuals." GK strives to make modern
technology simple, empowering, and easy for everyone to understand. The
only requirement is "the ability to play well with others."
Mark blames his interest in technical things and electronics on his
father Michael. "He gave me a Commodore 64 and helped me get my amateur
radio license (N6TBD) at an early age".

Understanding the Power of Hybrid Hosting: Dedicated Plus Clouds by
Paul Lancaster of GoGrid[1]/ServePath[2]
Cloud Computing isn't for everyone, neither is leasing dedicated server
environments. However, when you combine the two, the end result is a
hosting solution that will make your business successful. We call it
Hybrid Hosting. Capitalizing on the dynamic, scalability of GoGrid's
Cloud Hosting and the robust, high I/O throughput of dedicated
infrastructure, Hybrid Hosting is a way to manage complex,
high-availability infrastructures that meet demand, performance and
cost concerns.
Paul Lancaster is one of the founding employees of ServePath/GoGrid and
leads Business Development. Paul has been in the Internet industry for
the past 15 years working for software and services companies in
technical and business roles. Paul enjoys playing guitar when he is not
at his keyboard or spending time with his 6 year old daughter.
